From 5 -9 November, nine emerging UAE-based designers of Tanween 2025 will showcase designs that embody sustainability, contemporary design and UAE heritage

Dubai, UAE – 31 October 2025: Tashkeel will launch the Tanween Collection 2025 at Downtown Design 2025, presenting designs by UAE-based designers who were part of the Tanween Design Programme 2025. The collection of products by Tanween’s newest cohort will be presented in a showcase that reaffirms its long-standing commitment to sustainability, locally rooted design innovation, craftsmanship, and cultural identity. The products celebrate material experimentation and environmental consciousness, serving as a showcase for the UAE’s evolving design identity.

This year’s Tanween Collection showcases nine individual UAE-based designers selected via an open call. They have spent the past 11 months collaborating with engineers and scientists while researching, experimenting and prototyping their designs, with a focus on innovation and functional design. Their works explore the intersection of material innovation, cultural memory, and sustainability.

Several designs focus on light: Emirati interior designer Hessa Alghandi reclaims discarded palm wood in her sculptural pendant Lamah; Iraqi-British artist Sarah Al Dulaimi reimagines the abaya in Oculus, a wall-mounted light made from layered chiffon offcuts; and Emirati poet-designer Nasser Al Ghawi presents Al-Nawa Collection 2025, a chandelier and feature table made from thousands of date stones and eco-resin that celebrate the symbolism of the palm tree.

Furniture in the collection also reinterprets traditional craftsmanship through new materials. Alefiyah Ustad and Reem Shawkat of Clock & Cloud present Loodo, a coffee table inspired by majlis gatherings and made out of a sand-based material, while Tasneem Al Nabhani’s console Bayn wa Bayn uses palm-frond desert board to evoke the shifting landscapes of the Gulf. Jasim Alnaqbi’s jewellery cabinet Haila transforms the Emirati heirloom bangle into a sculptural object of reflection and care.

Lastly, Amna Al Shamsi and Hannaneh Rafiee of Sketch and Space Studio pay homage to the UAE’s pearl-diving heritage with Al Ghawas, a chair and companion seat crafted from reclaimed teak, metal, and naturally dyed fabric.

Following the exhibition, the designers will receive continued support from Tashkeel through funding, marketing, and sales resources to produce limited-edition product lines, helping them establish a foothold in the market.

“Tanween is more than a design program; it is an ecosystem that encourages all its participants to go on a journey of experimentation, research, and collaboration that nurtures a culture of sustainability and material innovation in the UAE,” said Salim Ahmed, Design Projects Supervisor at Tashkeel. “Each year, it provides a vital opportunity to demonstrate the depth of design talent emerging from the country and how locally made products, rooted in our craft traditions, can contribute meaningfully to the global design conversation. We’re proud to see our alumni go on to build successful careers and become notable members of the UAE design scene.”

Tanween 2026 Open Call

Alongside its showcase at Downtown Design, Tashkeel has announced the open call for Tanween 2026, inviting UAE-based designers, engineers, and architects to apply for the next cycle of the programme. Now entering its 13th edition, Tanween offers a year-long journey of research, experimentation, and mentorship that culminates in the development of new products to be unveiled during Dubai Design Week 2026. To date, 64  [RM1] designers and architects have participated in the Tanween Design Programme, with many of them now regarded as pillars of the UAE’s design community. Information on how to apply and full eligibility details for Tanween 2026 are available here.

As preparations begin for the next Tanween cycle, Tashkeel remains dedicated to cultivating talent and advancing a design language that is both contemporary and deeply connected to its surroundings.

Art Basel Paris with Louis Vuitton × Takashi Murakami

10/22/2025

Picture
  1.
Associate partner of Art Basel Paris 2025 for the third consecutive year, Louis Vuitton delighted to unveil the Artycapucines VII – Louis Vuitton × Takashi Murakami collection, almost 20 years after the first collection that combined the Japanese artist’s whimsical world with the House’s exceptional savoir-faire. To mark the occasion, Takashi Murakami has curated a unique installation which will be presented on the majestic Balcony’Conner at the Grand Palais.

The highlight of this edition of Art Basel Paris is an eight-meter-high sculpture of an octopus, inspired by Chinese lanterns, whose tentacles will take over the exhibition space. At the threshold of this sprawling arch, exclusive stylistic sketches by the artist will accompany visitors as they enter the vibrant world of Takashi Murakami. At Art Basel Paris, Louis Vuitton unveils a unique presentation and its new Artycapucines collection, created by Takashi Murakami. This monumental and vibrant piece has been custom-made for the space, which also features carpeting with the same tentacle motifs for the exhibition. The octopus’luminescent head will showcase Murakami’s iconicSuperflat Jellyfish Eyes pattern, which entered Murakami’s visual language as early as 2001. Drawing on the artist’childhood, this motif evokes the fear of being watched, while giving it a whimsical form that softens its frightening nature. The Kraken motif, meanwhile, has been dear to Murakami since the creation of The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg (2017). While inspired by myths of disappearance and engulfment, Murakami consistently transforms these universal fears into playful, almost joyful forms.

The 11 creations from the Artycapucines VII – Louis Vuitton x Takashi Murakami collection will be displayed within his tentacles, designed in dialog with his signature characters and motifs, Fromm. Dobro the Superflat Panda, including the iconic Smiling Flowers. The collection will unfold around three Plush Balls, spherical works that Murakami has been developing since 1995. Originally inspired by thetrompe-l’oil effect in Maurice Cornelius Escher’s lithograph Hand with Reflecting Sphere (1935), the Plush Ballsier three-dimensional plush sculptures that immerse us Ina kaleidoscopic vision. TheCapubloomandCapucines East West Rainbow bags will be exhibited next to the Multicolor Plush Ball (2008), the largest of these balls. Created in 2008 by Takashi Murakami, this piece kaleidoscopically showcases his multicolor motif from Smiling Flowers. Specially designed for Art Basel Paris in the style of this first creation, the Cherry Blossom Plush Ball (2025) uses the same principle of repeating playful and floral motifs in the shape of a ball, this time centered around the Sakura flower from the iconic Japanese cherry tree. Around this unique work, visitors can discover three versions of the House’s iconic bag: theCapucines BB Golden Garden, the CapusplitBB, and the CapucinesMiniAutograph.

This first exhibit is completed by the PandaClutch, studded all over stress and inspired by the panda characters dear to Murakami. At the forefront of the installation, the central octopus will point one of its tentacles towards the Plum Plush Ball (2025), which has also been created for the exhibition.

These 11 creations offer visitors the chance tore-explore Takashi Murakami’ abundant aesthetic, elevated to new heights byte House’s technical excellence. With this presentation, Louis Vuitton is renewing its commitment to contemporary creation. Since 1988, Louis Vuitton has continued this legacy by collaborating with internationally renowned artists and designers. The House provides them with the same savoir-faire and spirit of innovation that have shaped it since its creation, going far with its unrivaled expertise in leather work, for example in 3Dprinting, as demonstrated by certain pieces in the Louis Vuitton x Murakami 2025 collection. The collectionArtycapucines VII – Louis Vuitton x Takashi Murakami display at Art Basel Paris marks the perfect culmination of this artistic collaboration that began in 2003, especially after the presentation of a monumental sculpture entitled The Flower and the Child in Paris’s Hardin d’Acclimatization in late 2024 as well as several re-releases of iconic works in 2025.

Since the 1990s, Takashi Murakami has gained international acclaim for his unique contemporary art methodology of blending traditional Japanese art with the worlds of Japanese anime, science fiction and pop culture. Born in 1960 and trained at Tokyo University of the Arts, the artist has drawn from traditional Honda painting while inventing his own unique visual language, combining colorant recurring motifs such as smiling flowers, mushrooms and eyes –now hallmark features of the Hawaii aesthetic, of which he is one of the most prominent ambassadors. In doing so, Murakami has broken down boundaries between the art and subculture, between Japanese art and Western art, by freely merging theming his kaleidoscopic imagination. This bold aesthetic has earned him solo exhibitions in some of the world’s leading institutions, from the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles to the Guggenheim in Bilbao, and led to his inclusion in prestigious collections at the Museum of Modern Art (New York) and the center Pompadour (Paris).

In 2003, he was the first artist to be invited to reinterpret the House’s Monogram canvas, creating a Monogram with 33 colors and versions overlaying his signature motifs, from the panda to the Sakura cherry blossom. Many of his majorworks from the Collection have also been presented at the Foundation Louis Vuitton (KaikaiKiki[2005], The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg[2017], among others) – something that visitors are sure to notice at Art Basel Paris 2025.In the same way, other leading names such as Sol LeWitt, James Rosenquist, Richard Prince, César and Yayoi Kusama rank among the House’s high-profile collaborations. Since 2014, the Fondation Louis Vuitton, a masterpiece of contemporary architecture by Frank Gehry, has established itself as a platform for sharing these creative dialogs, which are central to Louis Vuitton’s commitments. This vision is also fostered through its vast network of exhibition spaces around the world, embodied by Espaces Louis Vuitton (Tokyo, Munich, Venice, Beijing, Seoul and Osaka).

Louvre emptied of historic jewellery in minutes

The world's most visited museum remained closed for a second day in a row on Monday. Around sixty investigators from the Paris Criminal Investigation Department's Anti-Banditism Brigade and the Central Office for Combating Trafficking in Cultural Property were mobilized.

Published today at 11:07 a.m., modified at 6:39 p.m.Reading time 2 min. What are people saying about museum security? The heist has reignited a row over a lack of security in France’s museums, which are far less secure than banks and increasingly targeted by thieves.
Last month, criminals broke into Paris’s Natural History Museum, making off with gold samples worth $700,000, while thieves also stole two dishes and a vase from a museum in the central city of Limoges, the losses estimated at $7.6m.
The justice minister, Gérald Darmanin, admitted on Monday to security flaws in protecting the Louvre. “What is certain is that we have failed, since people were able to park a furniture hoist in the middle of Paris, get people up it in several minutes to grab priceless jewels, giving France a terrible image,” he told France Inter radio.
Nunez acknowledged that securing museums was a “major weak spot”. He noted that security measures at the Louvre had been strengthened in recent years, and would be reinforced further as part of a multimillion-euro
The day after a spectacular burglary, a meeting on securing the Louvre Museum took place on Monday morning, October 20, in the presence of the Minister of the Interior, Laurent Nuñez, the Minister of Culture, Rachida Dati, as well as police officials, "to identify what worked and what didn't work," according to Place Beauvau.

During this meeting, "it was agreed that an instruction be sent to the prefects to organize without delay an update on the existence of the measures already deployed around cultural establishments, and to reinforce security measures where necessary," explained the Ministry of the Interior.
Earlier, Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin said the authorities had "failed" by not preventing the burglary at the Louvre, which reflects "a very negative image of France. " Criminals were "capable of putting a freight elevator" on the public highway, "making people climb up in a matter of minutes to retrieve priceless jewels and giving a deplorable image of France," the minister listed.

An “inestimable heritage value” The Louvre remains closed on Monday for the second day in a row after a burglary by four criminals who made off with eight "French crown jewels," the museum told Agence France-Presse (AFP).

The spectacular theft took place on Sunday morning, shortly after the opening, when a commando of four criminals stole 19th - century jewelry of "inestimable heritage value" —in the words of the Ministry of Culture—before fleeing. Among the jewels were the necklace from the sapphire parure of Queen Marie-Amélie and Queen Hortense, composed of eight sapphires and 631 diamonds, and the tiara of Empress Eugénie, which contains nearly 2,000 diamonds.
Around sixty investigators from the Paris judicial police's anti-banditry brigade and the Central Office for Combating Trafficking in Cultural Property have been mobilized.

The Court of Auditors explains that equipment has been installed at the Louvre in recent years in the temporary exhibition spaces that house many loans from abroad, to the detriment of the rooms housing the permanent collections. Thus, "60% of the rooms in the Sully wing and 75% in the Richelieu wing are not protected" by video surveillance, it specifies.

D’Angelo, Grammy Award-winning R&B singer, dead at 51

10/14/2025

D’Angelo, whose cool tunes and one hot music video turned him a legend of neo-soul, has died, according to a statement from his family. He was 51.
“The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life,” his family said in a statement provided to CNN by RCA, his longtime record company.
He died on Tuesday “after a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer,” his family said.
“We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind,” the statement added. “We ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time but invite you all join us in mourning his passing while also celebrating the gift of song that he has left for the world.”
RCA also released a statement saying they were “deeply saddened” by his passing.
“He was a peerless visionary who effortlessly blended the classic sounds of soul, funk, gospel, R&B, and jazz with a hip hop sensibility,” the statement read. “D’Angelo’s songwriting, musicianship and unmistakable vocal styling has endured and will continue to inspire generations of artists to come.”
Born Michael Eugene Archer in Richmond, Virginia, D’Angelo was the son of a Pentecostal preacher, according to a profile published in VIBE. Growing up in church, his musical talent was discovered early.
At the age of 16, he won the “Showtime at the Apollo” amateur night competition after he performed Johnny Gill’s hit single “Rub You the Right Way,” he recalled in 2014.
By the time he was 18, he headed to New York City in hopes of pursuing a professional singing career.
Given that his family was so deeply involved in the church, it was not a decision he took lightly.
In an interview with GQ published in 2014, he discussed feeling pulled between the sacred and the profane. Music was incredibly powerful to him.
“I learned at an early age that what we were doing in the choir was just as important as the preacher. It was a ministry in itself. We could stir the pot, you know?,” D’Angelo said. “The stage is our pulpit, and you can use all of that energy and that music and the lights and the colors and the sound. But you know, you’ve got to be careful.”
Singing wasn’t how he initially found his success.
In 1994, a single he co-wrote titled “U Will Know” was featured on the soundtrack of the film “Jason’s Lyric” and cracked the top 10 of the R&B charts.
The following year, his debut album, “Brown Sugar” debuted and established him as one of the rising stars of neo-soul – a sub genre of R&B that blends soul, jazz, hip-hop and rhythm and blues.
“Brown Sugar” would go on to be his first platinum selling album.
Five years later, he released “Voodoo,” an album that was almost overshadowed by the video for his single “Untitled (How Does It Feel?).”
In it, a seemingly nude and ripped D’Angelo sings sensually while looking directly into the camera lens – a performance that set fans aflame.
D'Angelo - Untitled (How Does It Feel) (Official Music Video)“We made this video for women,” Paul Hunter, who directed “Untitled” along with D’Angelo’s then-manager, Dominique Trenier, told Spin magazine in 2008. “The idea was, it would feel like he was one-on-one with whoever the woman was.”
The sexy video shot him into superstardom but also contributed to him leaving the music industry for an extended amount of time. The singer later said he was uncomfortable being a sex symbol.
“‘Untitled’ wasn’t supposed to be his mission statement for Voodoo,” Trenier told Spin. “I’m glad the video did what it did, but he and I were both disappointed because, to this day, in the general populace’s memory, he’s the naked dude.”
Both the album and that song won Grammy Awards.
D’Angelo would not release another album until 2014’s “Black Messiah,” which he recorded with the band The Vanguard.
A deeply private man, he was also a father and shared a now-adult son with fellow singer/songwriter, Angie Stone.
Stone died in March 2025 after a traffic accident following a performance in Mobile, Alabama.
In May, D’Angelo canceled a planned performance on Philadelphia, where he was set to headline the 2025 Roots Picnic, citing “an unforeseen medical delay” stemming from surgery he had earlier in the year. He said he was “advised by my team of specialists that the performance…could further complicate matters.”
“It is nearly impossible to express how disappointed (I am) not to be able to play with my Brothers ‘The Roots,’” D’Angelo wrote in a statement at the time. “And even more disappointed to not see all of you.”

“My first visit to Dubai was in 1996, when I was graciously invited by the Al
Habtoor family to join them for a polo event. Little did I know then that it would
mark the beginning of a long-lasting friendship and a shared passion that
continues to this day. I am truly looking forward to reuniting with the Al
Habtoor brothers and our partner Big Art Festival, playing at their club, and
hosting a special event where we can come together to celebrate our love for
polo alongside family, friends, and esteemed guests” -

MASH India Ball 2025 In Support of UNICEF India

10/9/2025

A Night Where Art, Cinema & Compassion Converge
Shalini Passi’s MASH Ball 2025 Spotlights Art, Design & Children’s
Empowerment with UNICEF India
The second edition of the MASH Ball, held at The St. Regis, Mumbai, was a glamorous confluence of creativity and compassion. Hosted by philanthropist, art patron, and MASH founder Shalini Passi, the event gathered leading voices in art, fashion, and philanthropy to support UNICEF India and the rights of vulnerable children across the country.

Curated around the theme “Fashion in Films,” the evening featured a dynamic blend of artworks, installations, and donated pieces, each reflecting empathy and bold artistic expression

Shalini Passi’s Elegance

Styled by celebrity fashion stylist Mohit Rai, host Shalini Passi
embodied an artistic metamorphosis that reflected the very spirit of
the MASH Ball. Her sartorial journey drew inspiration from the inner
dualities we all carry — beginning the evening as the White Swan in
a feathered, ethereal creation by Atelier Zuhra, symbolising purity,
grace, and control. As the night progressed, she transformed into
the Black Swan in a dramatic, sculpted ensemble by Amit GT,
channeling uninhibited freedom, sensuality, and power. This shift --
from light to dark, restraint to liberation — mirrored the Ball’s
deeper message: that creativity and transformation often emerge
from embracing one’s whole self, both the seen and the shadowed.

Bhagyashree, the timeless Bollywood icon, graced the MASH Ball
2025 in an elegant saree that beautifully blended tradition with
grace.

Shalini Passi emphasized the importance of art-based therapy &
early childhood development, underscoring its impact as a vital tool
in UNICEF’s efforts to support and nurture children.

Designer Gauri Khan, wife of Shah Rukh Khan
, and fashion icon Her
attendance reinforced the event’s growing cultural significance,
where art, fashion, and philanthropy came together to champion
children’s rights through UNICEF India.

Seema impressed in a chic, tailored ensemble blending modern
elegance with subtle traditional touches, perfectly complementing
the evening’s artistic spirit interior.

From timeless sarees to bold couture, the red carpet was a
showcase of elegance and individuality.

The MASH Ball 2025 welcomed a dazzling lineup of celebrity guests,
including Gauri Khan, Nargis Fakhri, Bhagyashree, Elnaaz
Norouzi, Karanveer Mehra, Mahira Sharma, Taha Shah, and
filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar.

Their presence added glamour, gravitas, and star power to the
evening, reinforcing the event’s cultural significance and its mission
to unite art, fashion, and philanthropy in support of UNICEF India.

The Mash Ball 2025 presented a compelling selection of works by
celebrated and emerging artists. The MASH Ball 2025 presented a
compelling selection of works by celebrated and emerging artists.
Highlights included F. N. Souza’s Untitled (1964), Michelle
Poonawalla’s AquaVitae and, and Raghava K.K.’s La liberté de
Guernica. Sculptural works by Ashiesh Shah, Narayan Biswas, and
Ann Carrington added depth, while a video installation by Ryan
Koopmans & Alice Wexell explored architectural decay. Rocco
Ritchie’s Self Portrait Before supported UNICEF outreach, and
contributions from Vibha Galhotra added ecological nuance. Key
partners Dhoomimal Art Gallery and Volte Gallery helped bring
the curatorial vision to life. The event was further elevated by The
Bar Collective, who brought the epitome of luxury to the evening,
helping guests craft unforgettable moments. Their expertise in
creating bespoke experiences transformed the gathering into a true
celebration. Interflora also added a touch of elegance with their
exquisite floral arrangements, perfectly complementing the art and
glamour on display.

The second edition of the MASH Ball unfolded as a spectacular
evening celebrating the theme “Fashion in Films,” bringing together
industrialists, artists, designers, philanthropists, and visionaries for
a cause. Held in support of UNICEF India, the event blended art,
glamour, and purpose—spotlighting the power of creativity to
inspire change.
The evening showcased a curated art experience and a dialogue
between fashion and film—exploring how visual storytelling shapes
memory, identity, and collective imagination. It was an
extraordinary gathering of thought leaders and creatives who share
a commitment to making a difference.
By engaging leading public figures, MASH and UNICEF continue to
strengthen advocacy for education, nutrition, clean water, and
protection for every child. As art becomes a medium for
transformation, the MASH Ball stands not just as an evening of
elegance but as a movement that builds a better future.
