By Nermin A., Editor Geneva, Switzerland - Blue-green diamond fetches almost 14 million francs in Geneva. "The Ocean Dream" fetched 13.6 million Swiss francs at an auction in Geneva. A bright blue-green diamond weighing 5.50 carats from Central Africa, the largest known of its kind to date, sold for 13.6 million Swiss francs in Geneva on Wednesday. This is a record for this type of gemstone, according to the auction house Christie's. The "Ocean Dream" thus set a new world auction record for a blue-green diamond, Christie's announced. The diamond had been estimated at between 7 and 10 million francs. "We sold this stone in 2014 for 8.5 million dollars. It had been acquired by a private collector from Asia who treasured it and wore it," Max Fawcett, international director of jewelry at Christie's, told AFP news agency. "And we have just sold it for 17 million dollars, thanks to the active participation of three different clients from very different regions of the world" who drove up the bidding, he added. This exceptional diamond - the largest blue-green Fancy Vivid diamond ever cataloged by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) - is cut in a triangular shape. It was "mined in Central Africa in the early 2000s," Fawcett explained. The diamond is the size of a small fingernail. |
