Follow on: www.instagram.com/hamid_ghafari Did you ever dream of tracing the ancient routes of explorers like Marco Polo traveling beyond borders, beyond comfort, and beyond the expected? That dream became Hamid´s reality in 2024, as he embarks on the transcontinental journey from Iran in the West to Indonesia in the East. He has reached India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan as we conduct our interview, (see images in this article). he explains, "when I left Iran on a bicycle, carrying just a few essentials and a heart full of questions. My goal: to ride from West to East crossing 13 countries across Asia, all the way to Indonesia not just to see the world, but to feel it, to connect with people, and to document the truth I find along the way." I'm Hamid Ghaffari (born Hamidreza Ghaffari), an Iranian traveler and storyteller, and this is my journey not just across continents, but deep into the human experience. (This interview was produced in June). What inspired your expedition across Asia, by cycling, and what's the deeper purpose behind it Hamid Ghaffari: Since childhood, I always had itchy feet and an adventurous spirit. In the spring of 2024, while I was traveling inside Iran, I realized I didn't just want to explore I wanted to get lost in the world. What started as an idea slowly took shape: why not by bicycle? I love cycling. It makes me feel free. Just me, my few belongings, and my bike no borders. Cycling offers a "slow-motion" version of travel. You're fully present, you adapt to the environment, you connect with locals in a real way. I began in Pakistan a country the media always told us was "dangerous." But I wanted to see it with my own eyes. I wanted to show others what I see the real, unfiltered world. My deeper purpose is to remind people that so many of our fears are mental, and we're capable of overcoming them. What have been the most meaningful stories and human interactions or cultural discoveries so far? Hamid Ghaffari: There are too many to count but one lesson hits me every time: You'll never know unless you go. Every country I've entered came with stories from others: "It's unsafe," "It's dirty," "There's nothing to see." But they were never true. We've been brainwashed to believe India is only about poverty or chaos but its culture, food, and history are beyond anything I imagined. The truth is, I've been welcomed everywhere in Pakistan, India, and beyond with kindness, warmth, and hospitality. As long as you go with respect, see yourself as a guest, and treat locals as your hosts, you'll find beauty in every corner of this planet. Do you recall your toughest parts of the journey physical, emotional, or political and what helped you to overcome them? Hamid Ghaffari: When you travel without a fixed plan, the challenges are endless. As an Iranian, one of my biggest struggles is always visa-related due to sanctions, I have to worry far in advance about every crossing. But my toughest experience was in Karachi, Pakistan, when I got severe food poisoning five days in. I was sick for almost three weeks, ended up in the hospital, and needed multiple IV treatments. I truly thought my trip was over. I slowed down, stayed in Islamabad, and a kind local friend I met there helped take care of me. He showed me the best, safest places to eat. That support plus patience helped me recover and continue. How do you document your journey across all the countries? How do you share these stories under such conditions? Hamid Ghaffari: My passion for storytelling has always been with me. I started this journey with a Sony camera, a DJI, an iPhone, microphones everything I could carry. I capture moments naturally as they happen. Later, when I have the time, I edit and publish. Recently, I even hired an editor and a translator to help improve the quality and speed of the process. Despite the tough travel conditions, I try to produce the most realistic content possible with English subtitles on YouTube and Instagram so anyone in the world can follow along. How do you manage to balance adventure and travel sustainably and lightly while cycling
such long distances? Hamid Ghaffari: Before this journey, I was a consumer. I didn't realize how consumerism was controlling us and hurting the planet. When I planned this odyssey, I knew I had to change. I learned we don't need much. Just the essentials. No one cares if you wear the same T-shirt for 6 months. If you accept that truth, you'll travel easier, live lighter, and feel more free. Living simply isn't just personal it's a way to fight overconsumption and do your part for this world. You're building a global audience and sharing stories that matter. What do you want your audience to feel, learn, or do after following this journey? Hamid Ghaffari: I want them to feel like they're traveling with me. To taste the freedom of a life where your home is just a bike and a few belongings. I want to show that a healthy, active lifestyle is possible without drugs, without complications. I want people to chase their wildest dreams, live simply, and never give up no matter how impossible it might seem. Follow on: www.instagram.com/hamid_ghafari
